World's Largest Fancy Vivid Green Diamond May Fetch $20 Million

The largest fancy green diamond in the world will hit the auction block on May 31.  Green diamonds are incredibly rare and this beauty is expected to bring as much as $20 million at Christie's Magnificent Jewels sale in Hong Kong.

The diamond is named the "Aurora Green" after the Aurora Borealis, the natural light display seen in the Arctic and Antarctic regions.  The "Aurora Green" is indeed a natural wonder, combining the purest vivid green color with considerable size. The green sparkler weighs 5.03 carats.

Green color in diamonds is caused by natural radiation in nearby rocks where the diamonds form.  The radiation produces defects or mistakes in the crystal structure of the diamond, and these defects can trap electrons that will interact with light to produce the green color.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) describes the cut of the fancy vivid green diamonds as "cut-cornered rectangular modified brilliant" and the clarity as VS2.  The "Aurora Green" is only the second fancy vivid green diamond ever to appear at auction.
